The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that 58 former governors are currently under investigation and facing prosecution for alleged misappropriation of public funds during their time in office.
According to the anti-graft agency, these ex-governors are accused of misappropriating, embezzling, or laundering a total of N2.187 trillion over a span of 25 years.
This amount does not include properties seized worldwide or those currently under investigation, which are valued at billions of Naira.
The total sum of N2.2 trillion allegedly looted by these individuals is comparable to the combined budgets of Lagos State and the South-East states for 2024, which amount to N2.25 trillion and N2.29 trillion respectively.
This figure surpasses the budgets of the North-Central states and North-East states for 2024, which stand at N1.89 trillion and N1.60 trillion, respectively, by a significant margin.
Since the return to civilian rule on May 29, 1999, Nigeria has had a total of 170 governors serving in the 36 states. The EFCC’s ongoing investigations and prosecutions cover ex-governors from various regions of the country.
The list of the 58 ex-governors currently or previously under investigation by the EFCC, along with the alleged amounts involved, includes:
