Due to its illegal operations, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, or FCTA, has declared plans to demolish “Yar Kasuwa,” a well-known market in Gwarinpa.
This was disclosed on Sunday in an Abuja meeting with stakeholders by Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the FCTA’s Department of Development Control.
He notified all parties involved, including the traders’ union representatives, that the department had given the dealers a quit notice to leave the area by January 7 at the latest.
He added that on January 8, work would start to demolish the market, which is situated near the Number 16 Road corridor in Gwarinpa.
Galadima clarified that the FCT Administration had given a contract for the arterial road’s complete development.
He said that even though the contractors and traders had been communicating since September 2023, they had persisted in requesting more time.
He claims that the development is causing a delay in the project’s completion.
“The time frame for the contract had been eaten into by the traders’ refusal to quit.
“If the contract is not executed as scheduled, the cost of materials would keep rising and could lead to contract variation, which is against the policy of the current Administration.”
“This meeting, therefore, is basically to inform the traders occupying Number 16 Road corridor to vacate the area, latest by Wednesday, as demolition will begin on Thursday (January 8).”
“This is necessary because the last time they were served notices, they claimed that they were not fully briefed,” he said.
